Online Portal Industry of Things features study on Connected Car Services

The internet portal “Industry of Things” currently reports on the study “Connected Car Services in Germany”, which Prof. Hans-Christian Riekhof and Marc Scholz conducted for the PFH Private University of Göttingen. The online portal focuses on the practical use of Internet of Things, M2M and Industry 4.0 applications.

82 percent of respondents see great potential in the connectivity of vehicles, the portal quotes Dr. Hans-Christian Riekhof, Professor of International Marketing, one of the authors of the study. The results suggest that a large majority of respondents (83 percent) have a high interest in Car2Car safety communication. This refers to warnings to following vehicles about an accident, black ice or similar dangers.

However, the biggest obstacle to the further development of the services is the lack of trust in data security. A good two-thirds of respondents (68 percent) expressed concerns about data security and data use. A total of 534 people participated in the study, which answered a variety of questions, when it was created in spring 2020.

Web Magazine Development & Electronics reports on Connected Car Services Study

The increasing importance of connectivity services in vehicles was recently a topic in the web magazine E&E (Development and Electronics, issue of 14.09.2020). “Whether accident and breakdown management, traffic sign recognition or the health monitoring of the driver: Connected-Car-Services are supposed to further increase the comfort and safety in the vehicle.” The subject of the topic-specific report is the study “Connected Car Services in Germany” by Prof. Hans-Christian Riekhof, which he conducted with Marc Scholz in spring 2020 for the PFH Private University of Göttingen.

“For car manufacturers, it is of very high importance to find out about the willingness to pay for Connected-Car-Services,” explains Hans-Christian Riekhof. “After all, various manufacturers have stated that their business model will change significantly in the coming years and that they no longer want to sell motor vehicles alone, but increasingly see themselves as mobility service providers.”

The study “Connected-Car-Services in Germany” was conducted from March 2 to 31, 2020 and is based on a quantitative data collection in the form of a standardized questionnaire. A total of 543 people completed the online questionnaire.

Automobilwoche reports on PFH’s “Connected Car Services-Study”

What is the willingness to pay for connectivity services in vehicles? The industry and economic newspaper Automobilwoche asked this question in its online edition (10.09.2020). The article deals with the increasing importance of electric cars and the associated Connected Services. According to the consultants at Cap Gemini, the importance of networked vehicles will increase in the coming years. “In 2018, there were still 119.4 million worldwide, but their number is expected to rise to 352 million by 2023.”

According to a study by Cap Gemini, 56 percent of car owners have networked services in their vehicles. About half of them use these services frequently or very frequently and just under a third occasionally. The study “Connected Car Services in Germany” by PFH Private University of Göttingen is also quoted.

In both studies, it is clear that the willingness to pay is currently relatively low. According to the Cap Gemini study, 39 percent of participants said that the services are useful, but not sufficiently developed, while another 23 percent are not aware of their benefits. According to the study “Connected Car Services in Germany”, conducted by Hans-Christian Riekhof and Marc Scholz in spring 2020, about a quarter are not willing to pay for connectivity services. Just over a third would pay about 10 euros a month for the service.

Tesla: ARD “Kontraste” Criticizes Handling of User Data

No other vehicle manufacturer is as pioneering in terms of technical progress and the use of data in the vehicle as the US car manufacturer Tesla. A report by the ARD magazine “Kontraste” now points to security concerns regarding data protection through the recording of environmental images in Tesla vehicles. According to research by the broadcaster RBB for “Kontraste”, the e-mobility manufacturer transmits video data from cars in Germany to servers in the USA.

“In our study “Customer Insights: Connected Car Services in Germany” we were able to show that the use of personal data in connection with connectivity services is a critical aspect for more than two thirds of the respondents”, explains Marc Scholz. The master’s student is, alongside Prof. Hans-Christian Riekhof, the co-author of the study created in spring 2020. “Only a third of the respondents trust Tesla. German premium OEMs are given the highest trust in this context.”

The RBB report also underlines that the desire for data from Tesla and other OEMs will continue to increase. Marc Scholz therefore advises car manufacturers to rethink their handling and communication with regard to data protection standards from the aspect of current and future trustworthiness of customers.

The US company Tesla wants to build 500,000 cars a year in Berlin soon.

Deutschlandfunk Picks Up Connected-Car-Services Study

Deutschlandfunk picks up the study “Customer Insights: Connected Car Services in Germany”. This was conducted by Prof. Hans-Christian Riekhof with Marc Scholz in the spring of 2020 for the Private University of Göttingen. As part of the “Computer and Communication” series, the radio station now interviewed Hans-Christian Riekhof on the topic aspect “Drivers are skeptical of Connected-Car services”.

In the approximately 6-minute contribution, it becomes clear what opportunities are now offered by car-to-car communication. Göttingen City Radio reports on Connected-Car-Services study

The study “Connected-Car-Services in Germany” has now been picked up by Göttingen City Radio. With the much-noticed study, one of the first investigations was carried out that analyzes the connectivity services currently available in the vehicle from the customer’s perspective. The radio station points to the enormous potential in vehicle connectivity highlighted in the study.

In addition, the radio editorial team addresses the security of the data that arises when using the Car2Car communication services and which companies are trusted in this regard. “The respondents consider Car2Car communication services, which primarily warn subsequent vehicles in dangerous situations, to be particularly forward-looking”, says the broadcaster.

The study was conducted by Prof. Hans-Christian Riekhof and Marc Scholz in the spring of 2020 for the PFH Private University of Göttingen. To this end, 543 people answered standardized questionnaires using quantitative data collection, which the authors of the study then evaluated.

Electronics Journal Reports on Study of Connected Car Services

The online electronics journal elektronikpraxis.vogel.de reports on September 15, 2020 about the study on Connected Car Services by Prof. Dr. Hans Christian Riekhof and Marc Scholz. Under the title “Concerns about the data security of networked vehicles”, the editorial team particularly highlights the aspect of data security.

The magazine quotes, among other things, one of the central findings that the authors of the study made with regard to consumer behavior. For consumers, not only cost-benefit aspects played an important role in the decision for or against Connected Car Services, but also the question of data security. The study therefore also examined the willingness of drivers to leave information about their health-related driving ability, their driving behavior or the chosen routes and detours to an international corporation.

Drivers with concerns about data security

The study found that compared to leading automotive corporations with leading IT corporations, users place higher trust in the automotive corporations. Nevertheless, security concerns regarding their data remained comparatively high at 68%. The trust in the premium manufacturers in the use of data from the connectivity services is therefore high: Apple is in 4th place ahead of other European manufacturers. Facebook and Google are clearly lagging behind.

Connectivity Services at Volkswagen: “Data protection is a top priority”

For Volkswagen manager Dr. Kersten Markus Lange, connectivity services are a prerequisite for many future fields of mobility. As part of the empirical study “Customer Insights: Connected Car Services in Germany”, which Prof. Dr. Hans Christian Riekhof and Marc Scholz conducted for the Private University of Göttingen, the following interview with Dr. Kersten Markus Lange, Head of Vehicle Logistics at Volkswagen, was conducted.

Professor Riekhof: What importance do connectivity services have for you compared to other new topics in the automotive industry such as electrification, mobility services, autonomous driving?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: Connectivity services have a high importance. They are a prerequisite for many future fields of mobility: Suitable connectivity or services based on it are crucial for the acceptance of electrification, for example. Customers can more easily accept a range limitation compared to combustion engines if a charging station search and booking as well as the management of the charging process are easily available via online services in the vehicle. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) and Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS) solutions and, last but not least, autonomous driving will also be difficult to implement without real-time connectivity. Finally, connectivity can also become a business model for car manufacturers, for example when it comes to selling functions or data to vehicle owners and users.

Professor Riekhof: Which technological trends will further promote the topic of connectivity in the future?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: Of course, the further development of mobile communications standards towards 5G will open up new application possibilities, especially in the area of Car2Car and Car2X communication. But we also notice in discussions with our commercial customers that topics such as “Voice Assistants” and the associated “Handsfree” operation are becoming relevant. This simply saves commercial customers time and they see potential to optimize their workflows.

Professor Riekhof: What measures do you think could be taken to further promote the spread of connectivity services?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: Connectivity is already standard in the premium segment, in other segments it is beginning to establish itself. With commercial customers, with light commercial vehicles, we are still at the beginning of development. A stronger focus of the service offers on added value at the vehicle and on a good and continuous customer experience will also drive the spread. In addition, competitive pressure within individual sectors and the associated search for optimization and savings potentials will promote acceptance.

Professor Riekhof: Connectivity greatly increases the flow of data in the vehicle or from the vehicle to the manufacturer. What conclusions about customer behavior have you already been able to draw from this?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: First of all, it is important to emphasize that there is no general data outflow from the vehicle. Data is always collected with the explicit consent of the customer for specific service offers. Data protection is our top priority! We observe that services with a high proximity to the vehicle are increasingly being used. Simply displaying information such as weather or news is often less attractive on a journey than route planning based on the current traffic situation or fuel price information in the infotainment system.

Professor Riekhof: How important do you think future collaborations with third-party providers, such as streaming providers or payment service providers, will be in the context of vehicle connectivity?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: Customers expect the same functionality from online services in a vehicle as on their smartphone. Therefore, the integration and cooperation with third-party providers is of great importance. On the one hand, to achieve the necessary development speed – pure in-house developments tie up more resources and time. On the other hand, to be able to offer customers the content they are used to from their smartphone, such as that of a streaming provider.

Professor Riekhof: Our study shows that almost a third of respondents are not willing to pay for Connected Car Services. Are you considering models of flexible pricing or On Demand Pricing to increase acceptance for Connected Car Services?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: Yes, this is indeed a big topic. We generally observe price erosions over time for digital offers. Those that initially cost the customer something are soon offered free of charge. We also currently observe many services as novelties in the connected car market that are already offered on the smartphone – and often free of charge, so I am not surprised by the result. In my view, the key will be to offer a suitable combination of free offers and priced value-added services.

Professor Riekhof: Our study also shows that respondents attach rather low importance to Driver’s Health Services. Does this surprise you, and wouldn’t it be necessary for reasons of traffic safety to monitor driving ability more closely?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: Health data is of course always a sensitive issue for users, just think of the discussion when health apps were introduced a few years ago. In my estimation, demand ultimately also depends on the specific design of the services. The demand for driver assistance systems is high, and not only from this do we know that accident-free driving is an important goal. It will therefore be interesting to see how Driver’s Health functions are used.

Professor Riekhof: Do you see different needs in terms of connectivity services for fleet customers and private customers?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: Commercial customers usually use their vehicle to do their work. The vehicle is a significant cost factor, but also a basis for revenue. Therefore, the expectation is much greater towards services that increase the availability of the vehicles. Entertainment functions, on the other hand, are more interesting in the private customer sector. Specifically, a parcel service provider will be more interested in topics that optimize his costs around the vehicle or his processes. An example is predictive maintenance, i.e. the vehicle actively reports when a problem seems to occur and e.g. the battery is getting weaker. These are functions that will be indispensable in commercially used vehicles in the future.

Professor Riekhof: According to our study, trust in the premium manufacturers in the use of data from the Connectivity Services is high, Apple is in 4th place ahead of other European manufacturers. Facebook and Google are far behind. How do you assess this result?

Dr. Kersten Markus Lange: We observe this in the same way in conversations with our customers. The use of data is a very sensitive issue, customers apparently perceive that the OEMs approach this topic carefully. The car will certainly not become a “data octopus”, the use of data is always only with the customer’s consent. Our goal is that driving with the products of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will be even better, safer and more comfortable in the future thanks to the new possibilities offered by connectivity.

Current Study on Connectivity Services in Vehicles: High Potential for Connected Car Services

With the now published empirical study “Customer Insights: Connected Car Services in Germany”, the PFH Private University of Göttingen examined the relevance of connectivity services in vehicles from a customer perspective. This is one of the first studies to analyze the currently available connectivity services in the vehicle from the customer’s perspective. The focus of the study by Prof. Dr. Hans-Christian Riekhof and Marc Scholz was the question of which currently available and which future conceivable connectivity services offer a particularly high relevance and can thus further increase the acceptance of these connectivity services.

Majority sees high potential for connectivity services in vehicles

An important finding in advance: The study confirms that a large majority of respondents see great potential in the connectivity of vehicles. The study thus underlines the increasing importance of such services for both customers and the automotive industry.
