07-2024_Pricing-News: Same price everywhere in LEH … the Handelsblatt and the discount lie

Kostet Nutella tatsächlich überall das Gleiche? Dass Lebensmittelpreise überall bis auf den Cent identisch sind, behauptete jedenfalls das Handelsblatt – unter Bezug einer fragwürdigen Studie.

Increased food prices – who actually profits from it?

Since 2020, food in Germany has become about a third more expensive. Shopping for everyday products in supermarkets has become significantly more costly. This is evidenced by an analysis of the Handelsblatt Research Institute, which evaluated the balance sheets of 70 medium-sized and large brand manufacturers as well as the leading retail corporations in Europe. It also became clear who benefits from higher prices – and who loses.

The Handelsblatt thoroughly examined the consequences of inflation on September 16, 2024. In 2023 alone, the prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 12.4 percent according to the Federal Statistical Office – significantly stronger than general inflation. The newspaper stated on the basis of its own analysis that not only the manufacturers, but also the retailers make profits. “Manufacturers and retailers have been accusing each other for years of driving up prices to increase their profits”, the newspaper writes. In fact, both benefited equally.

Increased food prices: The winners are primarily the large producers and retail chains

This applies primarily to corporations in terms of producers – globally active brand manufacturers such as Nestlé (Kitkat), Unilever (Dove) or AB Inbev (Beck’s) and Coca Cola. The large European retail chains, including Rewe and Metro from Germany, Tesco from the UK and Carrefour from France, made profits to a similar extent, according to the report.

The losers in this price increase, which set in around the start of the Corona pandemic, are the consumers who have to dig deeper into their pockets. Prof. Dr. Hans-Christian Riekhof evaluates the development from the perspective of the pricing expert: “It is remarkable that both the manufacturers and the retailers were able to use the phase of stronger inflation equally to increase their profits. This can be seen as an indication that both sides master the process of pricing quite well – but at the expense of the consumer.”

Pricing expert Riekhof: Both sides have understood the process of pricing – at the expense of consumers

In addition to consumers, however, another major loser comes into focus: medium-sized companies, producers with less than one billion euros in sales, for example Frosta and Weleda. This is also noticeable in the increasing number of insolvencies of consumer goods companies. According to the Handelsblatt report, they cannot afford to fight tough price wars with the large retail chains, especially not over a longer period of time. Many medium-sized consumer goods manufacturers would have a weaker position in negotiations with domestic trade because they often generate a large part of their revenues in Germany and are therefore more dependent on the four large supermarket chains Aldi, Lidl, Edeka and Rewe.

Increased food prices: Medium-sized companies place less emphasis on the professionalization of pricing

“The study by the Handelsblatt Research Institute makes it clear that medium-sized manufacturers lack market power on the one hand”, says Riekhof. “On the other hand, they probably also lack pricing competence. At least that’s what our own empirical studies show: medium-sized companies place less emphasis on the professionalization of pricing.”

If the market continues to consolidate, and that’s where it’s heading, corporations will become more powerful, a consumer goods manufacturer is quoted. And that’s not good news for retailers either. If the middle class bleeds out in the long run, the trade loses the versatility of its range.

Wirtschaftswoche on Germany’s Price Favorites 2024: Pricing Expert Riekhof Recommends More Price Flexibility

Which service providers from various areas of life offer the cheapest prices? For the second time, people were asked this by the analysis and consulting company ServiceValue and WirtschaftsWoche, a total of 213,000 people. The leaders in a ranking of “Germany’s Price Favorites 2024” according to the evaluation are the drugstore chain dm, closely followed by the discount chain Lidl.

In their current article “Germany’s Price Favorites 2024 “Cheap can anyone”: What really makes traders customer favorites” (06.02.2024), Wirtschaftswoche asks what makes these companies so popular in terms of pricing and what other companies can learn from them in this regard.

Pricing specialist Hans-Christian Riekhof advises companies to have more price flexibility

Interviewed by Wirtschaftswoche, Professor Hans-Christian Riekhof, expert for strategic pricing, points to the factor of price flexibility. Companies should learn to act much less generally when adjusting prices. Top performer dm provides a good example of differentiated pricing, explains the pricing specialist, who has developed and conducted numerous pricing studies.

The drugstore chain dm announced in 2019 that it would control its own prices for each store individually from now on, depending on its location and the competition on site. This means that if there is competition nearby, dm has the cheapest prices – in regions with less direct competition, the prices are then also gladly higher. The drugstore chain, according to Riekhof, takes advantage of the fact that consumers’ objective knowledge of prices is much lower than is usually assumed.

Although such pricing practiced by dm requires expensive resources such as personnel and IT, which smaller companies do not necessarily have at their disposal, it is also worthwhile for these companies to pursue more intensive pricing policy within their means, according to the pricing strategist in Wirtschaftswoche.

Pricing at Lidl: Discount store attracts with app as digital customer card

Lidl is currently testing digital customer cards, with which coupons can be delivered directly to the mobile phone. In Berlin and Brandenburg, customers can use the new customer loyalty app “Lidl Plus”. With this, they receive special offers and features such as discount coupons, digital receipts or the flyer ready for every purchase. It is noteworthy that the coupons are not delivered location-based, says pricing expert Hans-Christian Riekhof.

Lidl Digital Customer Card

The free app, available from the Apple and Google app stores, serves as a digital customer card. Lidl has come up with a number of “exclusive benefits” for users. For example, a 5-euro welcome coupon, new digital discount coupons for selected products and savings benefits with the so-called “Lidl Plus crackers”. Also scratch cards with further coupons and price advantages with partners, e.g. at Lidl-Photos, Lidl-Travels, FlixBus and regional, activate providers in the app.

In return, the discount giant receives valuable customer data. Lidl can thus compensate for the major disadvantage of stationary compared to online trading, where it is common to collect and evaluate customer data. Based on customer profiles created from this, the app can then make offers to the customer that Lidl assumes the customer needs at this time.

With the customer data, Lidl sends suitable offers to the app users

According to Lidl, customers do not see different prices based on their data. However, there is indeed a price difference in favor of the app users – compared to customers who do not use the app.

With the digital customer cards, Lidl is faster than e.g. Aldi, the main rival, says Hans Christian Riekhof. The pricing expert finds it interesting that the app is advertised on various local channels – here the example Out Of Home. Even more noteworthy is that the coupons are not delivered location-based. “You could also deliver the push notifications in front of the store, in the store and maybe even directly on the shelf. This would significantly increase the relevance – measured by opening and redemption rates – according to our project experience. Maybe this will come in the second expansion stage”, says Riekhof.

Which campaigns promise particular success can be read in the News from locandis.

By the way, the project of the digital customer card, which is currently running in around 250 Lidl markets in the pilot area Berlin and Brandenburg, is planned to be extended to all of Germany during the year 2020.
