Dorothee Bär: Data Protection Law Blocks Digitization

“For a stronger use of data, we will remove obstacles and set incentives. A key point for this is more legal certainty, the fragmented field of data protection law must be made more uniform and free of contradictions. We have seventeen data protection officers, one for each country and the federation, who repeatedly represent different legal views. We can’t afford that. We need federal interpretation aids here and must extend the principle of a leading data protection authority for cross-country research projects.”

– Dorothee Bär, Minister of State in the Chancellery and Federal Government Commissioner for Digitization, in “Catch-up need for digitization”, guest commentary in Handelsblatt, January 27, 2021, No. 18
