Everything was better before – so the usual narrative. SPIEGEL author Guido Mingels belongs to the extremely rare type of journalists who counteracts the usual media horror messages and dark future scenarios with facts. His booklet, backed up with very nice graphics, is titled “Everything was worse before” and subtitled “Why we are always doing better despite wars, diseases and disasters.”

Anyone who reads Björn Lomborg will find many of the statements familiar. And anyone who has read Gregg Easterbrook’s book “The Progress Paradox” will not be surprised by the messages. But everyone else who has little to counteract the media noise should take a very close look at Guido Mingels’ messages.
